1,000 Pounds!

Thursday, September 2, 2010

Time for an update!

Sorry it's been a while since the last post!

So far we are up to 960 lbs of organic waste that is on it's way to being some pretty amazing soil!

I'm currently in the process of getting some bigger "accounts" to get things going faster. As of now we've only been hitting up all the Starbucks & JoeBots. We are also in the process of getting our NonProfit Status....If anyone knows a Lawyer or CPA who works for CHEAP Let me know!! :)

Also if you are local (to the Tulsa Area) and would like to donate your own organic waste please contact us to arrange for pick up!

I'm Covered in Coffee Grounds!

We just went around to a bunch of the local coffee shops to collect used coffee grounds....right now we have approximately 45 lbs in the trunk and about a 1/2 a pound stuck to my shirt!

"It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it!"

Also we dropped off a can & composting trash bags to JoeBots Coffee Bar in the Blue Dome District. I'm really looking forward to working with them collecting their organic waste!

JoeBots is located inside Dwelling Spaces at 119 S. Detroit Ave in downtown Tulsa. If you live in or around Tulsa & haven't been by yet you need to Run! Don't walk! to Dwelling Spaces right NOW! It is the coolest little shop in town....full of tshirts, jewelry, music & just fun stuff from locals!

Tomorrow our mission is to collect egg shells....

If someone told me a year ago that I'd be driving around Tulsa begging for used coffee grounds & egg shells, I would've laughed in their face!

how we got this crazy idea!

So it all started when we took a vacation in Texas....

Dave kept saying "we are going to find the next big thing while we are here!" His confidence in this really got me optimistic but by the last day when nothing really got us inspired, I really started to give up....

Since it was our last night in Tx, we made a little trip to Austin to visit an old friend of Dave's named Jason. In college, Jason started a composting program on campus (Bobcat Blend). While talking to Jason about how important composting in Tx has become, we realized THIS was it!

I immediately started doing research & realized that the Tulsa Metro area doesn't have a true composting facility....

We knew this was something that not only interested us personally, but would make an impact on our community...

***background info: Dave & I were "Green" before it was cool...we were both part of recycling programs at our Elementary schools...we compost & recycle much of our own waste...and (funny piece of info here) the first night I actually met Dave, he told me (for no apparent reason) "I love soil"...at the time I honestly wondered if he was "ok" lol. who knew?!

We are so excited to be able to take our love for the environment, sustainability, & (in Dave's case) soil and make a positive impact on Tulsa.

This project is definitely about community in many ways....so if you have any questions, comments, advice or would like to learn more about composting PLEASE don't hesitate to ask!

Callie

P.s. Thank you Jason for letting us borrow your idea to continue your efforts in Tulsa!
